HERNIATED DISC: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS & TREATMENTS

The spine is made up of a series of bones (vertebrae) stacked on top of each other. From top to bottom, the spine includes seven bones in the cervical (neck) region, 12 in the thoracic (mid-back) region, and five in the lumbar (lower back) region, followed by the sacrum and coccyx at the base. These bones are cushioned by discs. The discs protect the bones by absorbing shocks caused by daily activities like walking, lifting, and twisting.

Each disc has two parts: a soft, gel-like inner core and a tough outer ring. Injury or weakness can cause the inner part of the disc to protrude through the outer ring. This condition is known as a slipped, herniated, or prolapsed disc, and it can cause pain or discomfort.

If the herniated disc presses on one of the spinal nerves, you may also experience numbness and pain that radiates along the path of the affected nerve.

CAUSES

A herniated disc occurs when the outer ring becomes weak or tears and allows the inner portion to slip out. This can happen with age. Certain movements can also trigger a herniated disc. A disc can slip out of place while twisting or turning to lift something. Lifting a very heavy object improperly or putting too much strain on the lower back can lead to a slipped disc.

If you have a physically demanding job that involves frequent lifting, you may be at higher risk of developing a herniated disc.

Overweight individuals are also at increased risk, as their discs must support extra weight. Weak muscles and a sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to the development of a hernia.

SYMPTOMS

You can have a herniated disc anywhere along the spine — from the neck to the lower back. However, the lower back is one of the most common areas for disc herniation. The spine is a complex network of nerves and blood vessels, so a herniated disc may add pressure to surrounding nerves and muscles.

Common symptoms of a slipped disc include pain and numbness, most often on one side of the body; pain that radiates to the arms or legs; pain that worsens at night or with specific movements; pain that gets worse after standing or sitting; tingling, unexplained muscle weakness, or burning sensations in the affected area.

The intensity of pain can vary from person to person. You should see a specialist if your symptoms include numbness, tingling, or if the pain interferes with your ability to control muscles.

NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR HERNIATED DISC!

If you’ve been diagnosed with a herniated disc, your first question might be whether it’s possible to treat it without surgery.
Recent studies have shown that herniated discs can heal or retract with the right treatment applied to the affected area.
Our experienced neurorehabilitation specialists conducted studies: before starting treatment, patients were diagnosed via MRI, and after applying the recommended therapies, a follow-up MRI showed significant improvement. The same research was conducted in the U.S.
Patients who followed the treatment and made careful adjustments to their daily routines successfully healed — their MRI scans confirmed disc recovery before and after treatment.

In our clinic, the success rate of treating patients with disc herniation has reached 95% using our innovative methods, which combine osteopathy, manual therapy, and physiotherapy.
Patients with pain, numbness, burning sensations, or weakness benefit from our groundbreaking approach.
In conclusion, WE NEVER RECOMMEND jumping to surgery before attempting disc rehabilitation techniques.

The treatment typically depends on the level of discomfort and how the disc has herniated.

Most people can alleviate disc herniation symptoms through a proper treatment plan that targets the root cause.
That’s why it’s crucial to first identify what’s triggering the problem and only then apply treatment.
We also recommend modifying your daily activities that may cause or worsen discomfort to help protect the disc.

Although you may feel tempted to avoid all physical activity due to pain, this can lead to muscle weakening and joint stiffness.
Instead, we encourage you to stay as active as possible through stretching or low-impact activities like walking.
