The tendon is the band of tissue that basically connects the muscle to the bone. The Achilles tendon, as the name suggests, is found at the back of the lower leg and connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. Also called the heel cord, the Achilles tendon facilitates walking by helping to lift the heel off the ground. In situations of overuse, the Achilles tendon can rupture completely or partially. Achilles tendon rupture is an injury that affects the back and lower part of the ankle. It is most common in people who engage in strenuous sports or recreational activities.

If your Achilles tendon ruptures, you’ll feel a pop, followed immediately by a sharp pain in the back of your ankle and foot, and in most cases it will affect your ability to walk properly.

An Achilles tendon rupture can be complete or partial and occurs when the tendon is stretched beyond its capacity. Intense jumping, twisting, or sudden acceleration while running can overstretch the tendon, and cause a rupture. A tendon injury can also result from falling or tripping.

Achilles tendon ruptures are most often seen in middle-aged people who participate in sports activities during leisure time. Although less common, the Achilles tendon can be weakened and ruptured by drugs such as steroids or certain antibiotics.
