BACK PAIN: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, AND TREATMENTS
According to the World Health Organization, lower back pain is the most common cause of work-related disability. At least 80% of Romanians experience lower back pain at some point in their lives.
Back pain can be caused by disc problems, joints, muscles, and ligaments, or more often, a combination of these. Usually, lower back pain results from trauma or acute injury, poor posture, or accumulated stress affecting the spine.
However, there are also rarer and more serious causes of back pain, which can lead to progressive inflammatory processes that affect the bones, muscles, and joints.
CAUSES
Lower back pain that starts suddenly and doesn’t last more than six weeks (acute) may be caused by sudden heavy lifting or movement. Back pain that lasts more than three months (chronic) is less common than acute pain.
Common conditions associated with back pain include:
Muscle or ligament strain.
Heavy lifting, repeated movements, or sudden awkward motion can strain the back muscles and spinal ligaments. If you’re in poor physical condition, continuous strain may lead to painful muscle spasms.
Bulging or ruptured discs.
Discs act as cushions between the bones (vertebrae) in your spine. The soft material inside a disc can bulge or rupture and press on a nerve.
Arthritis.
Osteoarthritis can affect the lower back. In some cases, spinal arthritis may lead to narrowing of the space around the spinal cord — a condition known as spinal stenosis.
Skeletal irregularities.
A condition in which the spine curves to the side (scoliosis) may also lead to back pain.
Osteoporosis.
The bones of the spine can develop compression fractures if they become porous and brittle.
Sciatica.
Sciatica can occur if a herniated disc presses on the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve connects the spine to the lower limbs. As a result, sciatica can cause pain in the legs, often felt as a burning or sharp sensation.
SYMPTOMS
For many people, lower back pain is often felt as pain or discomfort, located between the lower ribs and buttocks, and sometimes accompanied by leg pain.
Symptoms can vary from muscle pain to pulling pain, limited movement, altered gait, and difficulty standing upright. If sciatica occurs, the pressure on the nerve due to the spinal issue may feel like pain radiating down the leg and even into the ankle or foot. You may also feel tingling or numbness.
Acute lower back pain usually lasts a few days to a few weeks and is often the result of trauma or arthritis. Lower back pain that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic.
TREATMENT
Since back pain often has multiple causes, we are highly trained to diagnose problems in the joints and soft tissues of the body.
We will develop a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan to help you successfully manage your specific issue.
Manual therapy, such as spinal manipulation/mobilization, is frequently used to relieve symptoms and slow the progression of this condition. The exercise program is designed to restore muscle strength and re-educate movement patterns. We may recommend activities like Pilates or yoga to support long-term spine care.
We can also help relieve back pain using dry needling techniques.
As back pain becomes a growing issue for many, our treatment methods are among the most effective.
Over 95% of our patients resolve their back pain using our innovative, personalized techniques — even those previously told they needed surgery have recovered without surgical intervention.
OUR EXPERTISE
We bring a wealth of clinical experience specifically in treating back pain and spinal injuries. Back pain can have many different causes, which is why we will evaluate your condition and find the most appropriate treatment for your pain.
The back contains many different structures that can cause pain — including discs, ligaments, muscles, and nerve tissue. We aim to identify the underlying reason for the degeneration of these structures, allowing us to address the root cause of your problem, not just the symptoms.
Our goal is to help you understand what’s happening in your spine so that you can better manage your treatment and maintain results in the long term, if needed.
Take advantage of our treatment and become one of our many happy and fully recovered patients — without surgery!
