CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTS

Cervical spondylosis is also called cervical arthrosis. It is a condition involving changes in the bones, discs and joints of the neck. These changes are caused by the normal wear and tear of aging. With age, the discs of the cervical spine gradually break down, lose fluid and become stiffer. Cervical spondylosis usually occurs in middle-aged and elderly people.

As a result of degeneration of the discs and other cartilage, spurs or abnormal growths called osteophytes can form on the neck bones.

It is thought to be mainly a problem of ‘wear and tear’ or ageing. When it occurs in younger age groups, it is usually associated with previous damage to the joint. Certain occupations may also make a person more prone to the condition.

CAUZE

As you age, the bones and cartilage that make up the cervical spine gradually develop wear and tear. These changes can include:

Dehydrated discs: The discs act as cushions between the vertebrae of the spine. By the age of 40, most people’s spinal discs begin to dry out and shrink, allowing closer contact between the bones.

Herniated discs: Vertebral discs can develop cracks, which allow internal cushioning material to leak. This material can press on the spinal cord and nerves, resulting in symptoms such as arm numbness as well as pain radiating down the arm.

Injuries: If you have had neck injuries (for example, during a fall or car accident), this can speed up the aging process.

Bone spurs: Disc degeneration forces the cervical spine to produce extra amounts of bone in a misguided effort to strengthen the cervical spine. These bone spurs can sometimes pinch the spinal cord and nerve roots.

Stiff ligaments: Ligaments are cords of tissue that connect bones together. Ligaments in the cervical spine can stiffen with age, making the neck less flexible.

SIMPTOME

Most people with cervical spondylosis have no significant symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they can range from mild to severe and may come on gradually or appear suddenly.

A common symptom is pain around the shoulder blade. Some complain of pain along the arm and fingers. Pain may increase when:

  • stand up

  • sit down

  • sneeze

  • tilt your neck back

Another common symptom is muscle weakness. Muscle weakness makes it difficult to lift your arms or grip objects firmly.

Other common signs include:

  • a stiff neck

  • headaches that occur mostly in the back of the head

  • tingling or numbness mainly affecting the shoulders and arms, although it can also occur in the legs

TREATMENT

Physiotherapy, physiotherapy, osteopathy and manual therapy are successful in 95% of cases. Many patients realize that pain and other symptoms can be treated effectively without surgery.

In treatment sessions, we apply a combination of therapy procedures to the patient. After a thorough consultation, we identify your symptoms and the source of your problems. Depending on your condition, we customize each treatment plan. While we resolve your symptoms and relieve you of pain, we will also educate you so you don’t experience the same symptoms again.

There’s no need to panic and put off treatment for spondylosis, because as long as you live with the symptoms, your problem will get worse. Treatment always proves more effective when you start it early.

OUR EXPERTISE

We have a wealth of clinical experience specific to the management of spinal problems, with thousands of patients treated with our innovative techniques.

We will design a personalized treatment program to relieve your symptoms. It’s important to treat the source of your problem. With spondylosis, affected bones and muscles can change from person to person. So this can cause a myriad of symptoms. We use a variety of outcome-based therapies and treatments to help reduce your pain and get you back on your feet as quickly as possible.
