FACIAL PARALYSIS (BELL'S PALSY) - CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT
Facial paralysis is a condition characterized by weakness or loss of control over the muscles of the face. It can occur suddenly and affect either the whole face or just part of it, affecting facial expressions, the ability to close the eye or smile. In some cases it may be accompanied by pain in the ear area, loss of taste or increased sensitivity to sounds.
Types of facial paralysis
There are two main types of facial paralysis:
- Peripheral facial paralysis – Occurs when the facial nerve is peripherally affected. The most common type is Bell’s palsy, which starts suddenly and is often caused by inflammation of the facial nerve, possibly from a viral infection.
- Facial paresis – This refers to partial weakness of the facial muscles without complete loss of function. It can be caused by nerve damage, inflammation or stroke.
Both peripheral facial palsy and facial paresis require medical diagnosis to identify the cause and determine appropriate treatment.

CAUZE
Facial paralysis can have multiple causes, ranging from viral infections to neurological conditions or trauma. Common causes include:
- Viral infections – Viruses such as herpes simplex (responsible for cold sores) and varicella-zoster (which causes shingles) can inflame the facial nerve, leading to paralysis.
- Stroke – A stroke can affect the nerve center responsible for controlling facial muscles, causing paralysis or facial paresis.
- Facial nerve damage – Head trauma, surgery or bone fractures can damage the facial nerve, affecting its functionality.
- Autoimmune diseases – Diseases such as multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barré syndrome can attack the nervous system, including the facial nerve.
- Diabetes – People with diabetes are at higher risk of neuropathies, including facial nerve damage.
In some cases, the exact cause of facial paralysis remains unknown and is classified as Bell’s palsy. Whatever the trigger, early diagnosis is essential for recovery.
SIMPTOME
Facial palsy can affect one or both sides of the face and has varying symptoms, depending on the severity of the condition.
The main symptoms include:
- Weakness or paralysis on one side of the face – The patient may have difficulty moving the face, smiling or raising the eyebrow.
- Difficulty closing the affected eye – Can lead to dryness and discomfort.
- Facial asymmetry – Facial expressions become uneven, especially when talking or eating.
- Partial loss of taste – More common on the affected side of the tongue.
- Increased sensitivity to sounds (hyperacusis) – Sometimes patients perceive sounds as louder on the affected side.
- Ear or jaw pain – Sometimes inflammation of the facial nerve can cause pain around the ear.
- Tearing or excessive salivation – The facial nerve also controls these functions and can cause involuntary changes.
Symptoms often appear suddenly, within a few hours or overnight. If the paralysis is caused by a stroke, it may be accompanied by slurred speech, weakness in the limbs or dizziness – in which case emergency medical help is needed.
TREATMENT
Treatment for facial paralysis depends on the cause and severity of the condition. Recovery is possible with specialized therapies that help restore facial nerve function and improve muscle control.
1. Physiotherapy and recovery
- Exercises for facial paralysis – Helps stimulate muscles and prevent stiffness.
- Facial massage – Improves circulation and relaxes affected muscles.
- Electrical stimulation therapy – Can be used to reactivate muscles and improve nerve connection.
- Neuromuscular re-education techniques – Help regain control over facial movements and prevent abnormal contractions.
2. Complementary treatments for accelerated recovery
- Physiotherapy – Personalized exercises to regain muscle strength and improve facial coordination.
- Osteopathy – Manual techniques that help reduce muscle tension, improve circulation and support facial nerve regeneration.
- Dry Needling – Used to relax tense muscles and stimulate facial nerve repair through trigger points.
3. Additional recommendations
Depending on the response to treatment, in severe cases that do not improve, we may recommend that patients seek specialist consultation for surgical options or other advanced methods of recovery.
How long does recovery take?
Each patient responds differently to treatment, but most cases of peripheral facial paralysis improve in 3-6 months with appropriate therapy. For more severe cases, recovery may take longer and treatments should be adjusted according to the patient’s progress.
