GONARTHROSIS: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTS
Gonarthrosis (Osteoarthritis of the knee) means ‘inflammation of the knee joint’, causing pain and swelling in the knee joint. Also known as degenerative joint disease or age-related arthritis, gonarthrosis is more likely to develop as people get older.
Gonarthrosis occurs when inflammation and injury to the knee joint causes the cartilage tissue to break down. This breakdown in turn causes pain, swelling, deformity and loss of mobility over time. Cartilage is a firm, rubbery material that covers the ends of bones in normal joints and is made primarily of water and protein. The main function of cartilage is to reduce friction in joints and to serve as a ‘shock absorber’.
Patients with gonarthrosis sometimes have problems walking. Diagnosis can be difficult at first because the pain may be sharp or aching and the knee is often stiff.
CAUZE
The causes of gonarthrosis are not known. Factors that may contribute to the development of this condition include joint damage, advancing age and being overweight.
In addition, gonarthrosis can sometimes be caused by other factors:
the joints may not have formed correctly.
there may be genetic (inherited) defects in the cartilage.
ligament damage.
The person can put extra stress on their joints, either through overweight or activities that involve the knee.
women are at higher risk than men.
SIMPTOME
The most common symptoms of gonarthrosis include:
pain during activities, but also when at rest
increased sensitivity (discomfort when pressing on the area with your fingers)
rigidity
limping while walking
cramp in the joints
swelling
muscle weakness
inflammation
You may also be unable to move because of stiffness or pain in your joints, and you may be prevented from enjoying everyday activities that used to come easily. Your joints may become less stable.
As gonarthrosis becomes more advanced, the pain associated with it can become more intense. Over time, swelling in and around the joint may also occur. Recognizing the symptoms of gonarthrosis early can help you better manage the condition.
TREATMENT
