ARNOLD NEURALGIA (OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA)
Arnold’s neuralgia, also known as occipital neuralgia, is a disorder of the occipital nerves, specifically an inflammation or irritation of the occipital nerves. The occipital nerves run from the top of the spine at the base of the scalp all the way down the scalp. This condition causes pain in the back of the head, the back of the neck or the base of the skull.
Unfortunately, this pain is often mistaken for a migraine or other headaches with similar symptoms.
CAUZE
Occipital neuralgia occurs when the occipital nerves are under pressure or irritated, perhaps due to injury, tight muscles pinching the nerves or inflammation. The main causes include:
– Trauma to the back of the head;
– Neck tension or tight neck muscles;
– Osteoarthritis;
– Cervical disc disease;
– Infection;
– Inflamed blood vessels.
SIMPTOME
Occipital neuralgia can cause intense pain that feels like a sharp, electric shock in the back of the head and neck.
Other symptoms are:
– A burning sensation and throbbing pain, usually starting at the base of the head and moving to the scalp;
– Pain on one or both sides of the head;
– Pain behind the eye;
– Light sensitivity;
– Scalp sensitivity;
– Pain that occurs when your throat moves.
