RECOVERY AFTER A FRACTURE OF THE RADIUS OR ULNA
If you have suffered a fracture of the radius or ulna, then you can benefit from our qualified services. A fracture can be painful and can lead to significant functional loss or even disability. Depending on the severity of the injury, the loss may be temporary or permanent. Working to gain mobility and strength after a fracture should be your main goal. We can help you return to functional mobility as quickly as possible.
Often after fracture, the bone must be stabilized or immobilized to ensure proper healing. This is usually done using a cast. After a period of immobilization, physiotherapy will help you return to optimal function as quickly as possible.

PHYSICAL THERAPY AFTER FRACTURE
After a radius or ulna bone fracture, we’ll help you maintain some restrictions to make sure you don’t put too much stress on the healed bone. We’ll make recommendations for minor adjustments to allow you to move around the house safely.
Your first visit to us will usually involve an assessment and consultation. We will probably take measurements of body parts around the fracture site. This may include measurements of:
Range of movement
Power
Pain
Flexibility
Circuit or swell
Walking (for lower extremity fractures)
General functions and mobility
After the initial assessment, we can develop a treatment strategy to help you make a full recovery. Physiotherapy after radius or ulna bone fracture often focuses on overcoming the negative effects of immobilization, as this can cause loss of movement and strength, not least of all decreased functional mobility.
We after fracture will also help you to improve your functional mobility. This may include functional activities that focus on reaching and grasping.
TREATMENT
Physical agents or modalities can be used to eliminate pain and inflammation. Electrical stimulation can also be used to help improve muscle regain. You should remember that while passive treatments such as electrical stimulation or ultrasound may be used, you should also engage in active activities in your physical therapy.
If you have had surgery to reduce fractured bone, you may have surgical scar tissue. Scar massage and mobilization can help reduce scar adhesion and improve mobility around the scar.
Exercises to improve range of motion and endurance can also be initiated. Particular emphasis should be placed on the fractured area and the joints around the fracture. Exercise can help ensure that your bones can tolerate the loads and stresses you may encounter during normal daily activities. We recommend that you talk to your doctor and physical therapist to find out the right exercises for your specific condition.
