TENDINITIS (TENDINOPATHY): CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTS

Tendons are thick ropes that attach muscles to your bones. When tendons become irritated or inflamed, the condition is called tendinitis (tendinopathy). Tendinitis causes sharp pain and tend tenderness, making it difficult to move the affected joint.

Anyone can experience a tendon injury, but repetitive actions are more likely to damage a tendon. Any tendon can develop tendonitis, but you are more likely to develop it in the shoulder, knee, elbow, heel or wrist.

Tendinitis can also be found under one of the following names: ‘swimmer’s shoulder’, ‘athlete’s knee’, ‘golfer’s elbow’, ‘tennis elbow’.

Most cases of tendonitis can be successfully treated with physical therapy. Generally the period can last from a few weeks to several months of rehabilitation, but with our innovative methods we have considerably shortened the recommended treatment period.

CAUZE

The most common cause of tendonitis is repetitive action. Your tendons help you do a particular movement over and over again. You can develop tendonitis if you frequently do the same movement while playing sports or working out. The risk increases if you do the movement incorrectly.

Tendinitis can also result from injury, ageing, certain diseases such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, certain antibiotics. Athletes who play tennis, golf, bowling or basketball are at higher risk of tendinitis. You may also be at higher risk if your job involves physical exertion, overhead lifting or repetitive movements/jerks.

SIMPTOME

A tendon injury can happen suddenly or over time. Tendinopathy usually leads to pain, stiffness and reduced strength. Symptoms include:

pain, which may get worse as you use the tendon, stiffness, tender, red or swollen areas.

In early evolving tendinopathy, pain may be present in the early stages of activity and then disappear during activity, only to reappear once activity has ceased. Patients are able to localize the pain and often report a ‘sharp’ pain at first, and a ‘static pain’ a few weeks after the tendinopathy is present.

TREATMENT

We will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine the presence of tendinopathy and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

The goals of treatment for tendinitis are to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Initial treatment of tendinopathy usually involves rest, pain management, maintenance of normal mobility with a gentle range of exercises and gradual return to normal activities. We recommend applying ice in the acute stages and avoiding smoking as it delays tissue healing.

We recommend adequate rest to help ease your pain. We will also apply a variety of manual techniques that will limit your healing time. Our new treatment methods for tendonitis make huge differences to traditional treatment techniques, so you heal much faster.

OUR EXPERTISE

We have a lot of specific clinical experience in treating tendon injuries.Tendinopathy is diagnosed by a history of injury and a thorough physical examination. This is an area of expertise for physiotherapists and encompasses the whole body. Once a diagnosis is made, specific treatment advice can be given. We use a variety of outcome-based treatments and techniques in the management of tendon problems. Tendinopathies can leave the tendon vulnerable to rupture, so appropriate treatment should be sought.
