Told you are “slouching” your way through the workday? Kyphosis — an exaggerated curve of the upper spine — is increasingly common in desk workers, and in most adults it is postural and correctable.

What is kyphosis?

The thoracic spine naturally curves slightly outward. When that curve becomes exaggerated, it is called kyphosis (hyperkyphosis). The most common adult type is postural kyphosis — flexible, driven by habits rather than deformed vertebrae. Structural forms (Scheuermann’s, osteoporotic) need separate evaluation, which is part of our assessment.

Common symptoms

A visibly rounded back with the head carried forward, aching and fatigue between the shoulder blades, neck tension and associated headaches, stiffness of the mid-back, shallow breathing and discomfort with prolonged sitting.

Common causes

Long hours at desks and screens (“text neck”), weak back extensor muscles with shortened chest muscles, sedentary habits, and — in older adults — osteoporosis and vertebral compression, which is why accurate assessment matters.

Can it be corrected without surgery?

Postural kyphosis — yes, through targeted exercise: strengthening the thoracic extensors and shoulder-blade muscles, mobilising the mid-back and lengthening the front chain. Surgery is not a topic for postural forms; severe structural cases belong with orthopaedic specialists.

How we treat kyphosis at Medicine Park

We assess posture, thoracic mobility and strength, and differentiate flexible from structural curves. Your programme combines postural training, manual therapy for stiff segments, breathing work and a short daily desk routine — because posture changes through what you do every day, not only in sessions. All in English.

How long does correction take?

Tone and mobility improve within 4–8 weeks; visible postural change typically takes 3–6 months of consistency. We guide you step by step.

When to seek help

If a rounded back comes with pain, stiffness or affects your confidence, start with an accurate assessment.
