Tendinitis is the suffering of an overloaded tendon, and the biggest myth about it is that “rest will fix it”. Total rest does not heal a tendon: correctly dosed loading does.

What is tendinitis?

Tendons connect muscle to bone and transmit the force of every movement. When load exceeds what the tendon can adapt to, its fibres develop micro-damage and pain appears. The modern term is tendinopathy — the process is more degenerative than inflammatory, which completely changes the treatment strategy. Frequent sites: shoulder (rotator cuff), elbow (epicondylitis), patellar tendon, Achilles, hip.

Common symptoms

Localised pain on the tendon with movement and pressure, stiffness in the morning or after rest, pain at the start of activity that “warms up” then returns, and reduced strength in the affected movement.

Common causes

Sudden increases in training or workload, repetitive occupational or sporting movements, poor technique, muscles unprepared for the load, and long breaks followed by intense resumption.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Yes — the gold standard is a progressive tendon-loading programme: isometrics to calm pain, then eccentric work and graded return to activity. Repeated corticosteroid injections can weaken tendons; surgery is reserved for rare refractory cases.

How we treat tendinitis at Medicine Park

We identify the affected tendon and the cause within your movement chain, then build the loading programme appropriate to your stage, adding manual therapy, dry needling for associated muscles and smart activity adjustments — so you rarely need to stop completely.

How long does recovery take?

Recent tendinopathy: 4–6 weeks. Chronic cases: 3 months or more — tendons adapt slowly but predictably. We map the stages together at your first assessment.

When to seek help

If tendon pain has returned with every effort for more than two weeks, do not let it become chronic.
