It describes the suffering of the discs between your lumbar vertebrae, across a spectrum from dehydration to bulging — and in the vast majority of cases it is treated conservatively.

What is lumbar disc disease?

The intervertebral discs are the shock absorbers of your lower spine. With time or overload they lose hydration and elasticity, can bulge (protrusion) or fissure (up to herniation). “Disc disease” is the umbrella term for this spectrum. Important: disc changes also appear in people with no pain at all — imaging is always interpreted together with clinical examination.

Common symptoms

Lower back pain worse with prolonged sitting, bending and lifting; morning stiffness; episodes of the back “locking up”; sometimes radiation into the buttock or leg; and a tired, heavy lower back by the end of the day.

Common causes

Long hours sitting, incorrect lifting, repetitive bend-and-twist movements, weak core support, excess weight, smoking and genetic predisposition.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Yes — disc disease is the textbook conservative-care condition: stabilising exercise, postural hygiene and correctly dosed loading. Surgery is discussed only for advanced cases with neurological deficits.

How we treat lumbar disc disease at Medicine Park

After a full spinal assessment and correlating your MRI with clinical findings, the programme combines chiropractic and manual therapy for segmental mobility, core stabilisation training, posture education for desk, sleep and lifting, plus dry needling for paravertebral muscle guarding. Goal: pain controlled, discs protected long-term. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Painful episodes typically settle in 4–6 weeks; the stability that prevents relapses builds over 2–3 months of consistent work.

When to seek help

If lower back pain keeps returning or has started radiating into a leg, do not wait for a herniation. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free — bring your imaging and we will interpret it together.

Diagnosed with lumbar disc disease?
