The good news is that, in the vast majority of cases, the cause is mechanical, identifiable and treatable.

What is numbness?

Numbness (paresthesia) appears when a nerve is compressed or irritated — at its exit from the spine (nerve roots), along its path through muscles and anatomical tunnels, or through stretch. The distribution tells a lot: along a clear nerve path (dermatome) it points to the source; diffuse, “sock” or “glove” distribution raises other medical questions.

Common symptoms

Tingling, a “fallen asleep” sensation, loss of fine sensation, sometimes burning or “electric” feelings, worsening in certain positions and, when the motor side is involved, reduced strength.

Common causes

Nerve-root compressions (herniations, protrusions, spondylosis), tunnel syndromes (carpal, cubital, tarsal), prolonged posture and sleep positions, and more rarely systemic causes (diabetes, vitamin deficiencies) — which is why correct triage matters.

Can it be treated without surgery?

The most common mechanical causes — yes, especially caught before muscle weakness sets in. Severe compressions with confirmed motor deficit have a surgical indication.

How we treat numbness at Medicine Park

We locate the source with neurodynamic testing and assessment of the whole nerve path, then build the plan: manual and chiropractic care for the involved segment, nerve mobilisation, dry needling for the compressing muscles, postural rehab and ergonomics. If the picture suggests a systemic cause, we refer you to a doctor. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Recent forms: 3–6 weeks. Long-standing compressions need patience, with progress measured in stages.

When to seek help

If numbness has recurred for more than two weeks or you notice weakness, book an assessment. Sudden numbness on one side of the body with speech or vision changes is a medical emergency (112).

Numbness or tingling that keeps returning?
