A muscle strain is one of the most common injuries in sport and daily life — and correct recovery prevents recurrence and worse tears.

What is a muscle strain?

It is injury to muscle fibres by stretching beyond their capacity, from micro-damage (grade I) to partial (grade II) or complete tearing (grade III). Frequent sites: hamstrings (back of the thigh), quadriceps, calf (gastrocnemius), adductors and the lower-back muscles.

Common symptoms

Sudden pain during effort (“I pulled it”), pain with stretching and contracting the muscle, tenderness to touch, sometimes bruising (a sign of a more serious injury), reduced strength and, in large tears, a palpable “gap”.

Common causes

Effort without warming up, muscle fatigue, strength and flexibility imbalances, sudden accelerations-decelerations in sport, returning too fast after an old injury and muscles shortened by sedentary habits.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Grades I–II — yes, through active recovery. Even complete tears are often treated conservatively, depending on the muscle and the person. The key: not just rest, but correctly dosed progressive loading — the muscle rebuilds stronger through work, not prolonged inactivity.

How we treat muscle strains at Medicine Park

We assess the grade of injury and the cause (why it happened), then run phased recovery: acute-phase control, mobility and progressive loading, restoring strength and elasticity, retraining the sports movement and returning by criteria — not by calendar. We also correct the cause (imbalances, technique) to prevent recurrence. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Grade I: 1–3 weeks. Grade II: 3–6 weeks. Grade III: longer, staged recovery. Functional tests tell you when it is safe to return.

When to seek help

If a “pulled” muscle does not recover in a few days, if bruising appears, or you return to sport with fear, book an assessment.
