Swollen legs are one of the most common reasons people worry about their circulation — and most of the time the cause is harmless. Sometimes, though, the swelling signals a circulatory, lymphatic or internal problem worth investigating. The pattern tells you which: when it appears, how long it lasts, and whether it affects one leg or both.

What does swelling in the legs mean?

It is oedema of the lower limbs: fluid collecting in the tissues, most often around the ankles and calves. Swelling that pits when pressed and disappears overnight usually has a circulatory or postural cause. Swelling that is still there in the morning, with thickened skin, points more towards the lymphatic system.

Common symptoms

Swelling of the ankles and calves that worsens towards evening and after long periods standing or sitting; a feeling of heaviness and tightness in the calves; a mark left by a sock or by a finger pressed against the bone; sometimes tingling, night cramps or shiny skin. When only one leg is affected, the cause is usually local.

Common causes and risk factors

Prolonged standing or sitting and hot weather are the commonest causes: gravity and dilated vessels let fluid pool in the calves. Then come chronic venous insufficiency, with heaviness and visible veins; lymphoedema, where the swelling persists into the morning; pregnancy, common and usually normal in the final trimester; certain medicines such as calcium channel blockers or corticosteroids; and internal conditions — cardiac, kidney, liver or thyroid — which typically cause symmetrical, persistent swelling. In one leg only: injury, a sprain, infection or deep vein thrombosis.

When to seek urgent medical care

One leg swelling suddenly, warm, red and painful may indicate thrombosis. Swelling with breathlessness or chest pain, sudden swelling in pregnancy with headache or visual disturbance, or fever with spreading redness — all need same-day medical assessment, not a compress.

Can it be treated without medication?

For the benign causes, largely yes. Elevating the legs above heart level for 15–20 minutes several times a day, moving regularly — the calf muscle pump is the most effective natural drainage there is, staying properly hydrated, reducing salt, standing up from your desk every hour, and compression stockings where advised will resolve much of the everyday swelling. Cold compresses and alternating showers ease the heaviness; diuretic teas have little effect and do not treat the cause. If the swelling returns daily, the real remedy is treating the mechanism, not the symptom.

How we treat swollen legs at Medicine Park

We start by identifying the mechanism — venous, lymphatic, postural or static: the history, the pitting test, the distribution of the swelling, one leg or both. For venous and lymphatic oedema we use manual lymphatic drainage, a gentle and painless technique that stimulates lymph flow and visibly reduces swelling, delivered as a course of sessions. We combine it with calf-pump activation exercises, compression advice and postural corrections so the result holds between sessions, and we measure progress objectively using calf and ankle circumference. Where an internal cause is suspected we refer you to the right specialist — cardiac, kidney and liver oedema are treated by the relevant physician, and drainage is only carried out with their agreement.

How long until results?

In static and venous oedema the difference is usually felt after the first 2–3 drainage sessions combined with the movement programme. Long-standing or lymphatic swelling needs longer courses, and maintenance depends on the daily routine — movement, compression and time with the legs elevated.

When to seek help

If your legs swell every day, if the swelling no longer clears overnight, or if one leg is visibly more swollen than the other, do not simply put it down to the heat.
