Occasional cramps are normal. Frequent, intense or nightly cramps are not — and they usually have a cause you can treat.

What are muscle cramps?

A cramp is a sudden, involuntary and painful contraction of a muscle that refuses to relax. It most often strikes the calf, foot or thigh, lasts from seconds to several minutes, and can leave the muscle tender for hours afterwards.

Common symptoms

Sudden intense muscle pain, a visibly hard or knotted muscle, temporary inability to move the limb during the episode, mostly night-time occurrence, and residual soreness the next day.

Common causes

Intense or unaccustomed exercise, dehydration and mineral loss (magnesium, potassium, calcium), prolonged standing or fixed positions, shortened calf muscles from sedentary habits, poor peripheral circulation, pregnancy, certain medications (diuretics, statins) — and sometimes irritation of the lumbar nerves: cramps that keep hitting the same spot can point to a lower-back problem.

Can they be treated without surgery?

Yes — cramps are never surgical. But frequent cramps should not be ignored either. The key is identifying the driver: a shortened, overloaded muscle needs different treatment from a mineral deficit or a lumbar nerve irritation.

How we treat muscle cramps at Medicine Park

We assess your muscles, flexibility, circulation and lumbar spine to find the source. Your plan may include therapeutic stretching for the posterior chain, manual therapy and dry needling for tension points, guidance on hydration and daily movement, and a simple evening routine that dramatically reduces night cramps for most patients.

How long until improvement?

Most patients notice fewer episodes within 2–3 weeks. Cramps driven by a lumbar spine problem follow the treatment plan for that underlying cause — which we define after assessment.

When to seek help

If you cramp almost every night, if cramps strike during light daytime activity, or if they come with numbness, swelling or weakness — book an assessment. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.

Frequent leg cramps, especially at night?
