It is finding out how the system works. Who do you see first? Do you need a referral? Is physiotherapy the same thing as “kinetoterapie”? Will anyone speak English? What does it cost, and does your insurance cover it?

This guide, written by the physiotherapists at Medicine Park in Bucharest, answers those questions the way we answer them in the clinic, where we regularly treat patients from outside Romania. It is a practical map of physiotherapy in Bucharest for expats and English-speaking residents — the terms, the pathway, the paperwork and what to expect at a first visit.

Physiotherapy, kinetotherapy, “recuperare medicală”: the vocabulary

Three Romanian terms confuse newcomers, and they matter because clinics, insurers and Google use them differently:

Kinetoterapie (kinetotherapy) — rehabilitation through movement and exercise, one-to-one with a therapist. In the UK, US or Australia this is simply the core of what a physiotherapist does. In Romania it is a university degree in its own right and the word most locals use. Our kinetotherapy page explains the service.

Fizioterapie (physiotherapy) — in Romanian usage this traditionally means the physical agents: electrotherapy, ultrasound, laser, TENS, heat and cold. It is usually a complement to exercise, not a substitute. When an English speaker says “physiotherapy”, a Romanian clinic may understand the electrotherapy part — so say what you actually want: assessment and exercise-based rehabilitation. Our physiotherapy page covers what we offer under that name.

Recuperare medicală (medical recovery / rehabilitation) — the umbrella term for the whole field, and the name of the medical specialty (the “medic de recuperare” is a rehabilitation physician). Clinics often use it in their name; see medical recovery.

Manual therapies — osteopathy and chiropractic — are widely available in Bucharest too; our guide on osteopathy vs chiropractic explains how they differ and how to choose a practitioner.

Public or private? The two pathways

The public route (CNAS / “casa de asigurări”)

If you are employed in Romania and pay social contributions, you are insured with the national health fund (CNAS). Physiotherapy through it requires a referral from a family doctor (“medic de familie”) to a rehabilitation physician, who then prescribes a course of sessions at a contracted clinic or hospital. It is free or nearly free, but there are waiting lists, sessions are shorter and, in many places, device-based rather than one-to-one exercise, and English is not guaranteed. Reasonable for long-term chronic conditions; slow for an acute problem.

The private route

Private clinics see you directly, usually within days, with no referral. You pay per session or per package and claim back from your private insurer if you have one (see below). Sessions are one-to-one, longer, and assessment-led. Every physiotherapist practising in Romania must be a member of the Romanian College of Physiotherapists and hold its licence to practise (autorizație de liberă practică), renewed every year — you can ask to see it.

Do you need a doctor first?

For a private physiotherapy assessment, no. A physiotherapist is trained to screen for the problems that need a doctor and to send you on when necessary. You should go to a doctor or emergency department first if you have any of the warning signs: pain after a serious fall or accident, a joint that is deformed or cannot bear weight, fever with the pain, numbness in the saddle area or loss of bladder control, rapidly worsening weakness in a limb, chest pain or shortness of breath. If you already have scans or reports from your home country, bring them; a report in English, or its conclusion translated, is easiest to work with.

What a first visit looks like

Expect 45–60 minutes. It starts with your history (what, since when, what makes it worse or better, previous injuries, sport, job, medication) and continues with a physical examination: movement, strength, joint mobility, specific tests for the structure involved, and — for spine problems — neurological checks. You get a plain-English explanation of what is happening and why, a plan with a realistic number of sessions and goals, and a first set of things to do at home. Imaging (MRI, ultrasound) is requested only if the examination justifies it. At Medicine Park the first assessment is free, the team works in English and Romanian, and you can locate your symptom beforehand on the pain map.

What it costs and how insurance works

Private physiotherapy in Bucharest is priced per session, with packages for a course of treatment; our current prices are on the prices page. Ask for an invoice (“factură”) for every payment and keep it — you will need it for any insurance claim.

International private medical insurance (Cigna Global, Allianz Care, Bupa Global, AXA, MSH and similar): plans that include outpatient cover usually include physiotherapy, often with an annual cap on sessions or amount, and some require a doctor’s referral before they reimburse. Check your policy wording for “physiotherapy” or “rehabilitation” limits before you start, and ask the clinic for an invoice that lists the treatment and the session dates — that is what these insurers ask for.

Romanian private health subscriptions (often provided by employers through the large private hospital networks): these cover care inside the provider’s own network. An independent clinic is paid directly; some subscriptions offer partial reimbursement — ask your HR department or the provider.

EHIC / GHIC cards (EU and UK visitors): cover necessary treatment in the public system only, not private clinics.

Language, paperwork and practicalities

Language. Ask explicitly whether the treating therapist speaks English, not just the reception desk. At Medicine Park sessions are conducted in English or Romanian.

Booking. Private clinics book by phone, WhatsApp or online; same-week appointments are normal. Our contact page has the options.

Documents. Bring an ID and any prior imaging or reports. No residence permit or Romanian ID is needed for private care.

Reports for your insurer or home doctor. Ask for a written assessment summary in English at the end of the first visit; a good clinic provides it without fuss.

Location. Bucharest traffic is real. Choose a clinic you can reach in under 30 minutes, or one on a metro line; consistency matters more than any single session. Our address and directions are on the about us page.

What physiotherapy can do — and what it cannot

It can identify the mechanical cause of most muscle, joint, tendon and spine problems, reduce pain, restore movement and strength, and get you back to work and sport with a plan you can follow. It cannot replace a doctor when the warning signs above are present, treat a fracture or an infection, or promise a fixed date for recovery; two identical injuries can behave differently in two people. What it can promise is an honest assessment and a plan adjusted to your actual progress.

What you can do today, before any appointment

Write down what hurts, since when, on a 0–10 scale, and what changes it. It is the most useful thing you can bring.

Collect your paperwork: insurance policy wording, prior scans, medication list.

Keep moving within comfort — short walks, gentle range of motion — unless a warning sign applies.

Do not self-prescribe exercises from the internet before you know the cause; the same symptom can have opposite causes.

Book an assessment if the problem has not eased in 7–10 days or is limiting work, sleep or sport.

Frequently asked questions

Is physiotherapy in Bucharest good?

Romanian physiotherapists hold a university degree and a licence from the national College of Physiotherapists. Good private clinics work the way you would expect in Western Europe: assessment-led, exercise-based, one-to-one. As anywhere, quality varies between clinics; the questions to ask are whether the treating therapist speaks your language, whether the first visit includes a proper examination, and whether the plan has goals and a review point.

Do I need a referral for physiotherapy in Romania?

Not for private care. A referral is required only for treatment through the public health fund, and some international insurers ask for one before they reimburse — check your policy.

Can I use my international health insurance at a private physiotherapy clinic?

Usually yes, on a pay-and-claim basis: you pay the clinic, receive an invoice with the treatment and the dates, and submit it to the insurer. Direct billing depends on the insurer’s network in Romania. Check the annual physiotherapy limit and whether a referral is needed.

How long does a first physiotherapy assessment take?

Around 45–60 minutes, including the history, the examination, the explanation and the first home advice. At Medicine Park the first assessment is free, so there is nothing to lose by having the problem looked at early.

Physiotherapy in Bucharest for expats: the terms, public vs private, referrals, what a first visit looks like, costs, insurance and English-speaking care.

[1

post-574","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-guides
["GET
