WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

“I just rolled my ankle” — trivial, right? Except 1 in 3 ankles treated with “it’ll pass” ends up with chronic instability: repeated rolls, no confidence on uneven ground, ankles that “give way”. The difference is complete recovery — the kind that does not stop when the swelling goes down.

What is an ankle sprain?

Stretching or partial/complete tearing of the ankle ligaments — in over 80% of cases the lateral ones (anterior talofibular), when the foot rolls inward. Grades I–III describe severity. Pain on the INNER side or high up, between the tibia and fibula (syndesmosis), suggests injuries needing special attention.

Common symptoms

Pain on the outer ankle, swelling and often bruising in the first days, painful weight-bearing, instability on uneven ground and — with repeated sprains — a chronic feeling of an “unreliable” ankle.

Common causes

Stepping awkwardly on edges or bumps, landing from jumps, changing direction in sport, unsuitable footwear and — the most underestimated factor — weakened proprioception after old, incompletely rehabilitated sprains.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Almost always — even many complete lateral ligament tears do excellently with conservative care. The key: early dosed protection and loading (not prolonged immobilisation), then the essential balance and proprioception training — the part that prevents recurrence and most people skip.

How we treat ankle sprains at Medicine Park

We assess the ligaments, the syndesmosis and rule out fracture signs (Ottawa rules), then run phased rehab: swelling control and early mobility, progressive loading, peroneal strength, balance and proprioception on progressive surfaces, and return to sport by functional tests. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Grade I: 1–3 weeks. Grade II: 3–6 weeks. Grade III and syndesmosis: 6–12 weeks, staged. Balance training continues after the pain is gone — it is the “insurance”.

When to seek help

If your ankle is swollen and weight-bearing hurts, or if it keeps rolling, book an assessment. Complete inability to bear weight or pinpoint bone pain needs an X-ray first. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
