A worn or bulging disc in the neck can cause anything from a stiff, aching neck to sharp pain, tingling or weakness radiating into the shoulder and arm. The words “disc disease” sound permanent — but for most people, symptoms can be fully controlled without surgery.
What is cervical disc disease?
The discs between your neck vertebrae act as spacers and shock absorbers. With time or sustained load they can lose height, bulge, or herniate. When disc material or the resulting inflammation irritates a nerve root, pain travels along that nerve’s path into the arm — this is cervical radiculopathy.
Symptoms
Neck pain that may shoot into the shoulder blade or down the arm; tingling or numbness in specific fingers; weakness in the arm or grip; pain provoked by looking up or holding the head in one position; relief when supporting the arm on the head is a classic nerve sign.
Do I need surgery?
Rarely. Studies consistently show most cervical disc and nerve-root problems improve with conservative care within weeks to months. Surgery is considered for progressive weakness or signs of spinal cord involvement — and if we detect those signs at assessment, we refer you immediately. Everything else is our territory.
How we treat it at Medicine Park
Assessment locates the involved level and confirms the nerve pattern. Treatment then follows a clear sequence: reduce nerve irritation (positioning, traction techniques, manual therapy), restore movement of the stiff segments, then strengthen the deep neck and shoulder-blade muscles that protect the disc long-term. You leave every session knowing exactly what to do — and what to avoid — until the next one.
How long does recovery take?
Arm symptoms typically begin retreating toward the neck (“centralising”) within the first 2–3 weeks of correct treatment — that is the sign we are on the right path. Full programmes usually run 6–12 weeks.
When to seek help urgently
Progressive arm weakness, clumsiness in the hands, or trouble walking need prompt medical evaluation. For pain, stiffness and tingling — book your free assessment now, before compensation patterns settle in.
