WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

“I have a herniated disc” — probably the most feared spine diagnosis. And yet: most disc herniations, lumbar or cervical, do well without surgery, and herniated material can shrink spontaneously over the following months — a phenomenon documented on follow-up MRIs. The key is correctly conducted rehabilitation.

What is a herniated disc?

The intervertebral disc has a tough fibrous ring and a gel-like core. In a herniation, the ring fails and core material escapes beyond the disc’s contour, where it can irritate nerve roots. In the lumbar spine this causes leg pain (sciatica); in the cervical spine — arm pain. A herniation is the stage after a protrusion (where the ring is still intact).

Common symptoms

Back or neck pain radiating into a limb, tingling and numbness along the nerve, pain worse with sitting, bending, coughing or sneezing, and sometimes reduced strength in the leg or hand.

Common causes

Progressive disc degeneration under overload: prolonged sitting, incorrect lifting, repetitive movements, weak supporting muscles, excess weight, smoking, genetic predisposition.

Can it be treated without surgery?

In the overwhelming majority of cases, yes. Guidelines recommend 6–12 weeks of conducted conservative treatment before discussing surgery — which remains necessary only for significant or progressive motor deficits and rare emergencies (cauda equina syndrome: saddle numbness, bladder/bowel changes → hospital immediately).

How we treat herniated discs at Medicine Park

We correlate your MRI with the clinical exam and run phased rehabilitation: settling acute pain, centralisation exercises, progressive stabilisation, phase-adapted manual therapy, posture and lifting education, monitoring neurological signs. Each phase has clear criteria for moving forward. All in English, central Bucharest.

How long does recovery take?

Radicular pain typically improves in 6–12 weeks; the full anti-relapse programme takes about 3 months. At assessment we tell you where you stand and what comes next.

When to seek help

The earlier correct rehab starts, the lower the risk of chronic pain and surgery. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free — bring your imaging.
