WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

Neck pain shooting down the arm, tingling fingers, an MRI saying “cervical disc herniation” — and the fear of spine surgery? Breathe: just like in the lower back, most cervical herniations do well with correctly conducted conservative treatment.

What is a cervical herniated disc?

The discs between the neck vertebrae can fail just like lumbar ones: the fibrous ring fissures and core material escapes, irritating the nerve roots that run into the arm — hence cervical radiculopathy: pain, tingling and numbness along a characteristic path (C6 towards the thumb, C7 the middle finger, C8 the little finger).

Common symptoms

Neck pain radiating into the shoulder, arm and fingers, tingling and numbness along dermatomes, pain worse in certain head positions, sometimes reduced hand strength — and typical relief when resting the arm on top of the head.

Common causes

Progressive disc degeneration on a background of forward-head posture, long screen hours, repetitive movements, repeated minor strains and predisposition. Peak frequency: ages 40–60.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Yes — studies show favourable evolution in most cases with conservative care; cervical herniations even have high spontaneous resorption rates. Surgery is reserved for progressive motor deficits or signs of spinal cord compression (gait changes, clumsy hands — prompt neurosurgical review).

How we treat cervical herniation at Medicine Park

We correlate imaging with clinical and neurodynamic testing, then run phased rehab: settling the acute phase, gentle decompression and mobilisation techniques, progressive deep-neck-muscle training, posture education for screens and sleep, and careful monitoring of neurological signs. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Radicular pain typically improves in 6–12 weeks; the complete programme with consolidation takes about 3 months.

When to seek help

The earlier correct rehab starts, the smaller the risks. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free — bring your MRI.
