WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

You woke with half your face “dropped” — the eye won’t close, the corner of the mouth droops, your smile is lopsided? Peripheral facial palsy (Bell’s palsy) is frightening because it resembles a stroke. The reassuring news: it is a facial-nerve condition, not a brain one, and most patients recover well — especially with prompt medical treatment and guided rehabilitation.

What is Bell’s palsy?

The facial nerve, which controls the muscles of expression, becomes inflamed (often on a viral background) in its narrow bony canal and temporarily stops transmitting commands. The result: weakness or paralysis of one half of the face, developing over hours to days. IMPORTANT: sudden facial asymmetry is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY to rule out stroke — especially with other signs (speech, arm, balance). Corticosteroids started within 72h belong to the doctor.

Common symptoms

Inability to wrinkle the forehead and fully close the eye on the affected side, a drooping mouth corner, difficulty drinking and speaking, sound sensitivity, altered taste and pain behind the ear.

How does facial rehab help?

After the acute phase: neuromuscular re-education of expression (mirror exercises, correctly dosed — NOT “as much as possible”; overtraining favours synkinesis), gentle stimulation, management of the exposed eye (with the doctor), relaxing compensations on the healthy side, and in the late phase targeted work on synkinesis (involuntary associated movements).

What recovery to expect

Most patients begin to recover within 2–4 weeks, with substantial recovery in 3–6 months. Severe forms recover more slowly and benefit most from guidance — including preventing synkinesis.

How we work at Medicine Park

Coordinated with your neurologist: assessing the degree of involvement, a personalised phased expression re-education programme, eye-protection education, techniques to relax compensatory tension and structured progress monitoring with stage photos. All in English.

When to seek help

For a new onset: medical EMERGENCY first. For rehab: ideally within the first 1–2 weeks after diagnosis. For old residual weakness and synkinesis: rehab helps late too. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
