WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

A sudden, violent pain like a “whip strike” — or as if “someone kicked your calf” — followed by inability to push off on your toes? That is how the Achilles tendon ruptures: dramatically, typically in weekend sport, between 30 and 50. Prompt diagnosis and the right treatment path decide everything that follows.

What is an Achilles rupture?

Complete or partial tearing of the body’s strongest tendon, typically 4–6 cm above the heel, during acceleration or a jump. The tendon often had silent degeneration beforehand. The classic sign: the Thompson test (squeezing the calf no longer moves the foot) — prompt medical evaluation is mandatory.

Common symptoms

Sudden violent pain with a “kick” or “pop” sensation, inability to push off on the toes, a characteristic limp, sometimes a palpable “gap” in the tendon and bruising in the following days.

Surgery or functional treatment?

Both paths are legitimate today: the modern functional protocol (boot with early guided rehab) achieves re-rupture rates comparable to surgery for many patients, while surgery remains preferred for high-demand athletes. The decision is made with the orthopaedist, quickly — the window matters.

How does rehab proceed?

Long and staged, whichever path: protection in the boot with progressive heel-wedge reduction, guided early loading, controlled mobility restoration (no aggressive early stretching!), progressive calf strengthening — the key milestone being the single-leg heel raise — then retraining walking, running and jumping.

How we work at Medicine Park

Coordinated with your orthopaedist, on the chosen protocol: strict phase guidance (here both haste and delay are dangerous), progression by measured strength criteria, preventing healed-tendon elongation and a tested — not guessed — return to sport. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Normal walking: 3–4 months. Running: ~6 months. Full sport: 9–12 months. The tendon regains strength slowly — but predictably, with the right programme.

When to seek help

For suspected rupture: URGENT medical review (do not wait for it to “pass”). For rehab: from the first week after the decision. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
