WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

Numbness, tingling or a “pins and needles” feeling in your legs is unsettling — especially when it keeps coming back or spreads down to the foot. In most patients we see at Medicine Park, the problem does not start in the leg at all: it starts at a nerve in the lower back that is being compressed or irritated.

What causes numbness in the legs?

The most common causes we confirm in clinic are a herniated or bulging lumbar disc pressing on a nerve root, spinal canal narrowing (stenosis), piriformis syndrome, or prolonged sitting postures that keep a nerve under tension. Less often, numbness has circulatory or metabolic causes — which is exactly why the first step is a careful assessment, not a generic massage.

Symptoms to pay attention to

Numbness that follows a line down the buttock, thigh or calf; tingling that gets worse with sitting or driving; weakness when lifting the foot; night symptoms that wake you up. The pattern of the numbness tells us which nerve level is involved.

Can it be treated without surgery?

In the majority of cases, yes. When the cause is mechanical — a disc, a tight muscle, a stiff segment — targeted physiotherapy can reduce the pressure on the nerve and restore normal sensation progressively. Surgery is reserved for severe, progressive neurological loss, and we tell you honestly if your case needs a specialist consult first.

How we treat it at Medicine Park

Your first visit is a full assessment: movement testing, neurological screening and palpation to locate the exact source. Your plan then combines manual therapy to decompress the affected segment, nerve mobilisation techniques, and a progressive exercise programme that keeps the nerve gliding freely. You get a clear explanation of the cause, a realistic timeline, and exercises you can do at home between sessions.

How long until I feel a difference?

Most patients with nerve-related leg numbness notice a change within the first 4–6 sessions. Full recovery depends on how long the nerve has been compressed — which is why acting early matters.

When to seek help urgently

If numbness appears in both legs at once, affects the groin area, or comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, go to the emergency department immediately. For anything else — book your free assessment and let’s find the cause.
