WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

Waking up with numb, tingling hands? Dropping objects, or feeling pins and needles while holding your phone or the steering wheel? Numbness in the hands is a signal worth taking seriously — and when caught early, the cause can usually be treated without surgery.

What causes numbness in the hands?

Numbness appears when a nerve serving the hand is compressed or irritated somewhere along its path — from the neck, through the shoulder and elbow, down to the wrist. The most common culprits are carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve compression at the wrist), ulnar nerve compression at the elbow, and irritated nerve roots in the cervical spine. Quite often two levels are involved at once — which is why the whole nerve path needs assessing, not just the hand.

Common symptoms

Tingling or numbness in the fingers (thumb, index and middle finger in carpal tunnel; ring and little finger in ulnar problems), symptoms worse at night or during repetitive work, weaker grip, hands that “fall asleep”, and — when the neck is the source — pain or numbness running from the neck down the arm.

Common causes

Repetitive desk or manual work, prolonged wrist flexion (including during sleep), forward-head posture and chronic neck tension, cervical disc bulges or herniation, cervical spondylosis, diabetes, and pregnancy-related fluid retention.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Usually yes — especially before muscle weakness sets in. Mild and moderate carpal tunnel syndrome and most cervical nerve-root irritations respond well to conservative care. Surgery remains an option only for severe, confirmed compression with motor deficit.

How we treat numbness in the hands at Medicine Park

We locate the exact site of compression with neurodynamic testing and assessment of the neck, shoulder, elbow and wrist. Treatment may include manual and chiropractic care for the cervical spine, nerve gliding techniques, dry needling for the muscles compressing the nerve path, postural training, and ergonomic advice for your desk and sleep position — all delivered in English.

How long does recovery take?

Recent symptoms often improve within 3–6 weeks. Long-standing constant numbness takes longer — and we track progress with you in clear stages.

When to seek help

If numbness has been recurring for more than two weeks, wakes you at night, or your grip is getting weaker — book an assessment now. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
