WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

Your MRI report says “disc protrusion” and the internet has already scared you? Take a breath. A disc protrusion is one of the most common spinal findings, it appears in plenty of people with no pain at all — and when it does hurt, it is treated without surgery in the vast majority of cases.

What is a disc protrusion?

The intervertebral disc is the shock absorber between your vertebrae: a tough fibrous ring with a gel-like core. In a protrusion, the core pushes the ring outward and the disc bulges — but the ring stays intact. That is what distinguishes it from a herniated disc, where the ring fails and the core material escapes. A protrusion is effectively the stage before herniation — the ideal moment to act.

Common symptoms

Lower back or neck pain, local or radiating into the buttock and leg (lumbar protrusion) or shoulder and arm (cervical); morning stiffness; pain worse with prolonged sitting, bending or lifting; sometimes numbness or tingling along the irritated nerve. Important: many protrusions cause no pain — an MRI is always interpreted together with a clinical examination, never alone.

Common causes

Long hours sitting and poor posture, incorrect lifting and repetitive bend-and-twist movements, weak core support, excess weight, smoking (it accelerates disc degeneration) and genetic predisposition. Discs wear over years, not days — which means the process can be slowed and improved.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Yes — disc protrusion is the textbook conservative-treatment condition. With the fibrous ring intact, the disc responds well to decompression, correctly dosed therapeutic exercise and postural correction. Treated now, a protrusion has a good chance of never becoming a herniation.

How we treat disc protrusion at Medicine Park

After a full spinal assessment and correlation of your MRI with clinical findings, your plan may include chiropractic and manual therapy for the affected segments, core stabilisation training, decompression exercises, posture coaching for desk and sleep, and dry needling for the paravertebral muscle guarding. The goal: pain controlled, disc protected, relapse prevented.

How long does recovery take?

Recent pain episodes usually settle in 4–6 weeks. Building the muscular protection that keeps your disc safe long-term takes 2–3 months of consistent work. We tell you exactly where you stand after the first assessment.

When to seek help

If your back pain keeps returning, radiates into a leg or arm, or limits your activity — do not wait for it to become a herniation. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free. Bring your MRI; we will interpret it together and set the plan.
