WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

The shoulder “popped out” — violent pain, a locked arm, a trip to the emergency room for reduction. The acute part is solved, but the real question comes after: will the shoulder stay stable? The answer depends decisively on the rehab of the following weeks.

What is a shoulder dislocation?

The shoulder is the body’s most mobile joint — and therefore the most dislocation-prone, almost always anteriorly. A dislocation can injure the labrum (Bankart lesion), the capsule and — in patients over 40 — the rotator cuff. The big risk after a first episode: recurrent instability, especially in young and sporty patients.

Symptoms after reduction

Pain and swelling in the first weeks, apprehension with certain movements (arm rotated out and raised — the “throwing” position), a feeling of an “unreliable” shoulder, weakness, and with repeated episodes — dislocations happening ever more easily.

Common causes

Sports trauma (contact, falls onto an outstretched arm), accidents, and in people with joint laxity — even banal movements. Every new episode raises the risk of the next.

Can it be treated without surgery?

A first episode in most patients — yes: brief immobilisation, then structured rehab centred on the shoulder stabilisers. For young contact athletes and recurrent instability with structural lesions, surgical stabilisation is discussed with the orthopaedist — and post-operative rehab remains essential either way.

How we treat dislocated shoulders at Medicine Park

After reduction and orthopaedic clearance: gradual mobility restoration within safe limits, progressive rotator-cuff and scapular strengthening, proprioceptive training, retraining of the “at-risk” positions and return to sport by functional criteria, not by calendar. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

The full programme typically takes 3–4 months to sport return. Stages and criteria are set from the start — you always know where you are.

When to seek help

Correct rehab after the first episode is the best insurance against chronic instability. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
