WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

A blow to the outside of the knee or a twist on a planted foot — and now the INNER side hurts with pressure and load? The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is the most frequently injured knee ligament — and, fortunately, the one with the best natural healing capacity.

What is an MCL injury?

The MCL stabilises the inner side of the knee against forces pushing it inward (valgus). It is injured by direct lateral blows (football, skiing) or twists. Grades I–III describe severity. Being well vascularised, the MCL heals spontaneously in most cases — provided rehab is done correctly.

Common symptoms

Pain on the inner side of the knee, tenderness along the ligament, moderate local swelling, pain under valgus load and — in higher grades — a feeling of inward instability.

Common causes

Direct blows to the outer knee, twists on a planted foot, skiing (the classic “snowplough” fall), sudden changes of direction and off-balance landings.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Yes — even most complete isolated MCL tears are treated conservatively with excellent results: dosed protection (sometimes a brace), early progressive loading and strengthening. Surgery is discussed only for combined injuries (MCL + cruciates) or rare residual instability.

How we treat MCL injuries at Medicine Park

We assess the grade and rule out associated injuries (meniscus, cruciates), then run phased rehab: protection and early mobility, progressive strengthening (quadriceps, glutes, adductors), balance and proprioception, retraining changes of direction and return to sport by functional criteria. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Grade I: 1–3 weeks. Grade II: 3–6 weeks. Grade III: 6–10 weeks, staged. Functional tests decide the return.

When to seek help

Any inner-knee pain after trauma deserves assessment — undiscovered associated injuries are the classic trap. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
