WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

The shoulder is the body’s most mobile joint — and pays the price for it: shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal complaint. The causes differ greatly, and “generic” treatment disappoints — a precise functional diagnosis is the key.

What can shoulder pain mean?

Most commonly: subacromial syndrome (rotator cuff + bursa — pain raising the arm, “painful arc”), rotator cuff tendinopathy or tears (weakness, night pain), frozen shoulder (severe progressive stiffness), instability (after dislocations) and AC-joint or glenohumeral arthritis. Pain referred from the neck frequently imitates the shoulder.

Symptoms worth noting

Pain raising the arm between 60–120° (subacromial), night pain lying on the shoulder (cuff/bursitis), stiffness limiting even passive movement (frozen shoulder), weakness on lifting (cuff tear) and neck pain with radiation (cervical).

Common causes

Repetitive overhead work, slumped posture, cuff–deltoid imbalance, sudden overload, diabetes (a risk factor for frozen shoulder) and age.

Can it be treated without surgery?

The vast majority — yes: subacromial syndrome, tendinopathies, frozen shoulder and many degenerative cuff tears respond to structured exercise, with evidence comparable to surgery. Large traumatic tears in active patients are surgical discussions.

How we treat shoulder pain at Medicine Park

We assess the shoulder, shoulder blade, thoracic and cervical spine, establish the functional diagnosis, then build the plan: manual therapy, a progressive cuff and scapular programme, posture correction, dry needling and activity dosing. A clear path with progress criteria. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Subacromial syndrome: 6–12 weeks. Frozen shoulder: longer (months), but with steady improvement. Post-operative: staged with your surgeon.

When to seek help

If shoulder pain wakes you at night, limits dressing or lifting, or has lasted more than two weeks — book an assessment. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
