WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

The knee carries the load of every step — and is one of the most common sources of pain at any age. The right question is not “how do I kill the pain today” but “what exactly is causing it” — because a meniscus problem, a tendinopathy, arthritis or an unstable kneecap are treated completely differently.

What can knee pain mean?

The most frequent causes we see: knee osteoarthritis (cartilage wear, after 50), meniscus lesions, patellar tendinopathy (“jumper’s knee”), patellofemoral pain syndrome (pain around the kneecap in young and active people), bursitis, sprains and muscle imbalances that load the joint incorrectly.

Symptoms worth noting

Location tells a story: pain on the joint line suggests the meniscus; below the kneecap — the tendon; around the kneecap on stairs and prolonged sitting — patellofemoral; diffuse with morning stiffness — arthritis. Swelling, locking and giving-way are signs that need prompt assessment.

Common causes

Sports or occupational overload, sudden increases in activity, weak thigh and gluteal muscles, excess weight, inefficient walking or running mechanics, and old injuries never fully rehabilitated.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Most causes of knee pain — yes. Even in surgical cases (major ligament injuries, advanced arthritis), correct rehab before and after the operation decides the outcome. Step one is always an accurate functional diagnosis.

How we treat knee pain at Medicine Park

We assess the knee, hip, ankle and your walking or running pattern, identify the affected structure and the cause within the chain, then build the plan: manual therapy, targeted progressive strengthening, mechanics correction and guided return to activity. If imaging or an orthopaedic consult is needed, we tell you directly. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Depends on the cause: tendinopathies and imbalances — 4–8 weeks; arthritis — a base programme over 2–3 months; post-injury — staged. You get a realistic timeline at assessment.

When to seek help

If knee pain persists beyond two weeks, returns with every effort, or the knee swells or locks — book an assessment. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
