WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

A hip fracture — yours or an elderly parent’s — changes everything overnight. After surgery, the question that truly matters is: will independence come back? The answer depends mostly on the rehabilitation of the first months — and starting early makes the difference.

What is a hip fracture?

A break of the femoral neck or upper femur, typically after a fall, on a background of osteoporosis in older adults. Treatment is almost always surgical (screws, nail or prosthesis) — the orthopaedist’s decision. Rehabilitation starts practically immediately after surgery and continues for months.

Why is rehab critical?

Because the real risks of a hip fracture do not stop at the bone: prolonged immobility in older adults brings accelerated weakness, lost balance, fear of walking, pressure sores and general complications. Early active rehabilitation is the best documented antidote.

How does recovery proceed?

In stages: getting out of bed and first steps with a frame (first days–weeks, per the surgeon’s weight-bearing indication), progressive walking and balance, hip and leg strengthening, stairs and outdoor walking — then balance training to prevent future falls, the component that protects the other hip.

What do we address in parallel?

Reducing fear of falling (a major predictor of decline), home adjustments (rugs, thresholds, lighting), general strength and — with the treating doctor — osteoporosis management: a hip fracture is a signal requiring a long-term plan.

How we work at Medicine Park

We take over rehab after discharge, coordinated with the orthopaedist: a staged programme with measurable goals (standing, walking, balance, stairs), patient work adapted to age and condition, family involvement in the home plan and constant progress monitoring. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Functional walking with support: weeks. Independence at home: 2–3 months. Mature recovery and confidence: 6–12 months of steady progress. Every stage counts.

When to start

As early as possible after surgery — delayed rehab is the biggest avoidable risk. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free; we support families with clear guidance.
