WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

About your condition

An unlucky twist at football, skiing or on a curb — the knee swelled and no longer feels trustworthy? Knee sprains are common and often underestimated: “the swelling went down” does not mean “I recovered”. Without proper rehab, sprains leave behind instability and higher risk of worse injuries.

What is a knee sprain?

A sprain is stretching or partial tearing of the ligaments stabilising the knee — most often the medial collateral ligament (MCL), then the lateral collateral, and in more serious trauma the cruciate ligaments. Grades I–III describe severity, from stretched fibres to complete tears.

Common symptoms

Immediate pain on the inner or outer side of the knee, swelling within hours, tenderness along the ligament, pain with weight-bearing and a feeling of instability. A “pop” at injury or massive immediate swelling raises suspicion of cruciate or meniscus injury — prompt assessment.

Common causes

Twisting on a planted foot, sudden changes of direction, off-balance landings, direct lateral blows, uneven ground and unprepared muscles.

Can it be treated without surgery?

Grade I–II sprains — yes, with structured active rehab. Even many complete MCL tears do well conservatively. Cruciate injuries are assessed individually — in young contact athletes surgery is discussed, and rehab before and after decides the outcome either way.

How we treat knee sprains at Medicine Park

We assess ligaments, menisci and stability, then run phased rehab: swelling control and dosed protection, mobility restoration, progressive strengthening, balance and proprioception training, and guided return to sport using functional tests — by criteria, not by calendar. All in English.

How long does recovery take?

Grade I: 2–4 weeks. Grade II: 4–8 weeks. Complex injuries: staged rehab over months. Functional tests tell you when it is safe to return.

When to seek help

Any sprain with swelling, instability or persistent pain deserves assessment — correct rehab now prevents years of an “unreliable” knee. Your first assessment at Medicine Park is free.
